Walking around the edges of the site to see what can be found.

Submitted by admin2 on Sun, 01/04/2009 - 10:34pmThis month the group had a "Scouting Outing" to a new location in Walker county. An initial quick survey of the site a few days before turned up few fossils, so there was some concern about taking a group. We also planned for two more stops, and with this group, even heading off for dinner can be fun! We need not have been concerned, plenty of fossils were found by everyone.

The round circles with thin pointed leaflets radiating outward are a form of calamites foliage.

Larry pried off the part of this rock containing the lepidodendron fossil, and found this mass of ferns on the back.

The Lepidodendron, also known as the scale tree, is related to the club mosses, and could reach a height of 100 feet.
