It was a chilly, gorgeous, cold day to hunt Carboniferous/Mississippian fossils in a local rock quarry!
It was a gorgeous October day when the members of BPS set out for a field trip to a chalk gully. Just a tad bit warm and that day and even warmer while traversing the gullies. Thank goodness for the shade from the cedar trees casting a shadow for us. Lots of finds for the day consisting of Scapanorynchnus (Goblin Shark), Cretalamna, and Squalicorax (Crow Shark) teeth were found. James our Paleontologist guide had discovered a fish jaw and turtle shell near each other, not only was he was assisting us with ID's, he was excavating the skeletal finds to add to the museum collection. In addition to the fossilized shark teeth, lots of other marine fossils were found to add to collection of the members. A great time was had by all and look forward to going back soon!
We will be meeting at the HOMEWOOD LIBRARY this month. This is not our normal meeting location, but the Hoover Library is setting up voting booths for the Nov. 5 elections.
The annual National Fossil Day event at the Alabama Museum of Natural History will be held in Smith Hall on November 2, 2024 from 2pm until 3:30pm. This year's theme is "Dinosaurs". Since BPS is the only group in Alabama to ever find a new species of dinosaur, we will have some never-before-seen pictures from the dinosaur dig, and some short dig videos will be showing at our ex
