Fossils of the Black Belt - A Hands-On Field Workshop

UPDATE - The workshop will begin at 9AM instead of 8AM.

This teacher workshop will familiarize participants with the study of fossils and field geology, give them information about sites that can be visited by their classes, and provide material for use back in the classroom, including the book Lost Worlds in Alabama Rocks by Jim Lacefield.   This workshop is co-sponsored by the Geological Survey of Alabama education committee, The University of West Alabama, Discovering Alabama, The Black Belt Museum, and the Alabama Geological Society, with volunteer support from members of the Birmingham Paleontological Society.

The workshop is intended for anyone who teaches Earth science in Alabama or who expects to do so in the future. It is primarily aimed at K-12 teachers with little or no geology training.  You will learn the basic geology of Alabama, how to identify fossils found in Alabama, and participate in a fossil collecting field trip.  The cost of the workshop this year is only $15, which includes lunch.  Also, there will be great door prizes once again!

Schedule and application form are in the attached document.
