The Directors of BPS were informed by Dr. Adiel Klompmaker that our society has been chosen for the honor of receiving the 2024 Alabama Avocational Paleontologist award at the National Fossil Day event being held on November 2, 2024. What a great honor!
The Fossil Day activities will be held in the Grand Gallery at the Alabama Museum of Natural History in Tuscaloosa, AL. As usual, the day will be filled with activities and programs for all ages. Groups from around the state, including BPS, set up tables showing off their fossil and geology related specimens, there are children's activities, a keynote speaker, and presentation of the Alabama Avocational Paleontologist Award, this year, to BPS.
BPS celebrates their 40 year anniversary September 2024, and over the years has always worked as a group on all our activities. This award is recognition to all the BPS members over the years who contributed to furthering the science of paleontology, and enjoying the ride! From our initial meeting in 1984, members have assisted professionals on fossil digs, added to several museum collections, provided support for teaching events, spoken at schools and other organizations, and participated in several fossil exhibits, both in Alabama and Mississippi. Some exhibits were organized by museums, and some were organized by BPS members. We were once told BPS could be the poster child for representing how avocational paleontologists can work hand in hand with professionals, with mutual respect.
