February 7, 2011 Guest Speaker - Dr. Jim Lacefield

Dr. Jim Lacefield will be our featured speaker at the February 7 BPS meeting.  Dr. Lacefield is the author of "Lost Worlds in Alabama Rocks; a Guide to the State's Ancient Life and Landscapes".   He is working on a new, updated and much larger version of the book, and will give attendees a sneak preview of the new book.

He and his wife Faye Lacefield are also the founders of a nature preserve, a privately protected scenic area that contains around 700 acres and 15 miles of hiking trails.  Cane Creek Canyon Nature Preserve now has a Facebook page set up by Friends of Cane Creek Nature Preserve.  There are waterfalls, rock shelters, boulders and scenic overlooks.  The unique geology of the area was created by water carving canyons through the hard sandstone.  Fossils appear in unlikely places.  The preserve is located in NW Alabama near Tuscumbia and Muscle Shoals.  There are picnic areas throughout the preserve, and primitive camping is available.
