Our speaker for the March 7, 2011 BPS meeting will be Christa Marks, a hydro-geologist with the Alabama Surface Mining Commission. Her topic will be "Coal Mining in Alabama: What We have Uncovered", which will cover geologic conditions that contributed to the coal beds here in Alabama, the fossils one finds when digging coal, and she will give us some insight into the geology part

Dr. Jim Lacefield will be our featured speaker at the February 7 BPS meeting. Dr. Lacefield is the author of "Lost Worlds in Alabama Rocks; a Guide to the State's Ancient Life and Landscapes". He is working on a new, updated and much larger version of the book, and will give attendees a sneak preview of the new book.

UA ALLELE Lecture Series Continues with NC State Biologist Mary Schweitzer
Dr. Mary Schweitzer of North Carolina State University will present her lecture, "T. Rex Under the Microscope: A New Look at an Old Dinosaur," Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Biology Building auditorium on The University of Alabama campus. Schweitzer is a professor of marine, earth and atmospheric sciences at North Carolina State University. Her presentation is the third in the 2010-2011 Alabama Lectures on Life's Evolution, known as ALLELE.

will be a concurrent Annual Meeting, Directors Meeting, and
Regular Business meeting. We will elect and install officers for 2011. The Awards Committee
will be honoring numerous individuals for their various contributions
to the group, including hard work and events that provided us with
hours of laughter and entertainment!
The incoming Republican majority in the House of Representatives has selected the National Science Foundation (NSF) as the first target for a "YouCut Citizen Review", in which ordinary Americans are being asked to identify "wasteful spending that should be cut".

During September and early October, BPS members had several field trips to find fossils and help excavate in the Cretaceous gullies of Dallas County. Over a period of several days (September 19, 24, 26, October 1, 2, 3) a turtle and mosasaur were excavated. Also, a number of other fossils were found, including shark teeth, upper and lower Xiphactinus fish jaw with teeth, a variety of shells
