If you're looking for Alabama fossils, this is the place to come!

Tombigbee river, brooksella, ammonite, 4 wheeling in Lowndes county, jacketing a dinosaur skull.

Exciting field trips, educational programs on paleontology and geology, and interesting people to meet! No prior knowledge required, just a desire to learn and a love of fossils and the outdoors. Professionals and novices of all ages are welcome.

Jan 5, 2026 - Annual Meeting and Program

Our program for January is a Show and Tell, so bring a few of your favorite fossils and some stories to tell about them.  A slideshow of our last two field trips and the Christmas party will be showing during the meeting.

The Show and Tell begins at 7:00, followed by the Annual meeting and Director Elections at 8:00 pm.  

Hoover Public Library, downstairs, Fitzgerald Conference Room. Free and open to the public.

Dec. 1, 2025 - Program and Business Meeting

Our program for December is a Member Show and Tell, so bring a few of your favorite fossils for everyone to ohh and ahh about, and let's share the wonderful places we've been, and the great fossils we've found this year.  Our "Year in Review - 2025" slideshow will be running the entire meeting.

The program begins at 7:00, followed by the business meeting at 8:00 pm.  

We are once again meeting at the Hoover Library.

Hoover Public Library, downstairs, Theatre Conference Room. Free and open to the public.

Nov 3, 2025 - BPS Program - Coal Age Fossils from Crescent Valley Mine

Dr. Ron Buta, professor emeritus of Astronomy at UA, will be presenting findings from his research at the Crescent Valley Mine.

The program begins at 7:00, followed by the business meeting at 8:00 pm.  This month, we will be meeting at the Homewood Public Library, downstairs, conference room 116.  (This location is temporary, until the Hoover Public Library completes renovations.)

An excited group of BPS members visited a new site this month, where fossils very similar to St. Stephens were found, including echinoids, crabs, shark teeth, and very nice calcite crystals.

Another productive trip to the gullies of south Alabama turned up a fish jaw, shark teeth, shark vertebra, fossil shells, shrimp burrows, and a number of other fossils.

BPS set up tables at the 2025 Alabama Fossil Fest, where at least 280 visitors stopped to examine fossils at our exhibit, and discuss field trips and exciting discoveries over the years.  Dr.

Oct. 5, 2025 - BPS Program - Alabama's Black Belt, part 2

James Lamb, Director of the Black Belt Museum, University of West Alabama, has prepared a special pre-recorded 2-part classroom video.  Alabama's Black Belt - Part 2 will be shown at the October meeting.

 

The program begins at 7:00, followed by the business meeting at 8:00 pm.  This month, we will be meeting at the Homewood Public Library, downstairs, conference room 101.  (This location is temporary, until the Hoover Public Library completes renovations.)
