Our May speaker is Dr. Richard Carroll, an expert on coal systems at the Geological Survey of Alabama, who will present a lecture titled "The Secret Life and Death of Wood: Alabama's Petrified Wood".

An opportunity for volunteers to work with paleontologists from East Tennessee State University and the General Shale Natural History Museum.

February 3, 2014 BPS Meeting

February's program is titled "Piecing Together the Paleogeography of Coal Age Alabama." Speaker Jim Lacefield will examine the geography of Coal Age Alabama and highlight some of the factors that helped produce the rich and diverse record of fossilized life that existed here during the Pennsylvanian Period; factors that included the unusual tectonic and environmental changes that were taking place here during that time. Wetumpka Crater Events Set for January 30th to February 1st

If you have not been on a tour of the Wetumpka Impact Crater, you have missed a great history lesson. About 85 million years ago a very large meteor hit where Wetumpka sits today. It created a five-mile wide crater that is still visible near the city.
