After a BBQ stop to warm up and fill our bellies, we proceeded to a site that contains some Frog Mountain formation.  Most of our finds at this site were horned corals and trilobites, though many shells and various forms of other coral were also found.  Most of the trilobites ended up in the museum.

January 25, 2014, St. Clair County, AL - Site 1

In spite of the freezing cold weather and strong wind, a good group showed up to hunt fossils in an old quarry area, with lots of chert rubble containing mostly brachiopods and crinoids.  Sam found a large, quite rare, crinoid head at the site.

 

November 10, 2014 Program - Uplift of the Tibetan Plateau

Our speaker on November 10, 2014 is Dr. Delores Robinson, Associate Professor of Geological Sciences at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. The title of Dr. Robinson’s talk will be “Uplift of the Tibetan Plateau." Hoover Public Library, Theater Conference Room at 7:30 pm. Free and open to the public.

ALLELE Series - UA - Dinosaurs Without Bones

Dr. Tony Martin will present "Dinosaurs Without Bones: What Dinosaur Trace Fossils Tell us About Evolution" on Thursday, October 2nd 2014, in the Biology Building Auditorium (Rm. 127) at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Fossils of the Black Belt Workshop Tuesday Oct 21

This one day workshop will be in Livingston near Selma, Alabama on Tuesday, October 21, 2014.  Taught by professors from the University of West Alabama and geologists from the Geological Survey of Alabama, it is primarily for science teachers, and will help integrate real earth science into the curricula.

October 6, 2014 program - Alabama’s Biodiversity: What we have, why we have it, and why it matters.

Our speaker on October 6 will be Dr. R. Scot Duncan, Associate Professor of Biology and Urban Environmental Studies at Birmingham-Southern College.  Dr. Duncan will be speaking on “Alabama’s Biodiversity:  What we have, why we have it, and why it matters.” He will also have copies of his recently published book, Southern Wonder: Alabama’s Surprising Biodiversity, available for purchase after the program.

September 2014 BPS Meeting

Our speaker on September 8 will be Dr. Dana Ehret, Curator of Paleontology for the Alabama Museum of Natural History at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Dr. Ehret will present “New Fossil Finds for 2014” highlighting some of the new fossils the Alabama Museum found this Spring and Summer. Hoover Public Library, Meeting Room A at 7:30pm. Free and open to the public.

August 4, 2014 - Ingersoll Shale and Rise of Flowering Plants

August’s program is titled "Cretaceous Park - the Ingersoll Shale and the rise of flowering plants."  Dr. Brian Axsmith of the University of South Alabama will examine the significance of the plant fossils at this important site in Russell County and show some of the other fossils from the site including feathers and insects in amber.

July 7, 2014 Program - "Wyoming Fossil Sites"

Our July speaker is BPS President Leisa Whitlow, whose presentation will focus on various fossils and fossil sites of Wyoming.

The business meeting will start at 6:30 PM, followed by our program at 7:15.

Hoover Public Library, downstairs across from the Library Theater.  200 Municipal Drive, Hoover, Alabama.

June 2, 2014 Program - "Upper Mississippian Crinoids of North Alabama."

Our June speaker is Gabe Ward, a University of Alabama geology student, who will be speaking on "Upper Mississippian Crinoids of North Alabama." Those with Mississippian fossils that they would like to have identified are invited to bring them to the meeting.

The BPS business meeting starts at 6:30. The program starts at 7:15pm and is free and open to the public..
